I had to pull my transmission out because I did not have third or fourth gear. It just acted like it was put In neutral, so I pulled the transmission and t case and replaced my transmission and put my t case back on, And now I have no movement what so ever in any gear I put it in. I have changed out the filter and fluids in transmission and my the case, everything worked great until I pulled transmission and t case, other than the third and fourth gear, also I pulled the battery cables off and on. Did I mess something up by doing that because I have no movement what so ever in any gear? I can feel the transmission switching the gears and can feel it go in, engine even pulls down like it should from park to any gear. Oh, when I put the t case back on I did not pull the encoder motor off, did I brake that part by chance? I can clearly hear my front engage, but I cannot hear the double click that I am suppose to hear from the tccm that everyone keeps saying I would. Does that mean I need to change it out for a new one or what? My shifter on my volume shows it changes to all gears just fine, p r n d 3 2 1 am. Of them it shows on my volume that they are in that gear, I can even fill the transmission changing to the gears, but its like and feel just like my t case in stuck in neutral, it does not make any noises or any grinding, it acts like everything is just fine, but no movement in any gear, why would that be? If my t case is stuck in neutral now after changing out my transmission what do I do to get it back to two wheel drive so I have my truck back?

This kind of sounds like the transmission is working but tcase is stuck in neutral. See picture and scan for codes see if any come up. This must be a New venture 243 t case to do this however. Then get back with codes also check connections at tcase encoder as it may not be getting voltage.

Just put a transmission in the truck three months ago. Was working fine, pulled out of driveway today, got maybe eighth of a mile, while shifting from second to third, transmission just stopped pulling. Will not pull in any gear. Fluid level is perfect and fluid looks shiny red like new. No symptoms of slipping or any other transmission problems. Is there anything else that would cause this besides a front pump failure?

Hello,

It sounds like you have a broken input shaft or other component inside the transmission. But it also could be the transfer case. I would start by scanning for codes to see if something comes up we can use to find the problem.

Here is a guide to get us started:

Please let us know what you find.

Cheers, Ken

Found the problem. The transmission people that put transmission in did not make sure the filter was seated correctly, filter fell into pan, losing suction.

My truck will shift from the column but the transmission acts like it is stuck in neutral. I checked the shift cable and replaced the neutral safety module and checked the fluids. I do not know if I need to clear the codes after I replaced the module or what.

Good evening.

Even if it was a electrical issue, it would still go into gear. The electronics contols shifting points and clutch/band applications.

You should still have engagement into gear.

Two things come to mind, either the torque converter has failed or the front pump has failed. The transmission will have to be removed and inspected for the failure.

I see it is a four wheel drive. Did you try changing to four wheel hi or lo and see if it engages? A bad transfer case would also cause this.

Good morning.

If it was the transfer case, the speedometer would work on the dash when you put it into gear. What that means is the transmission would work but would not pass power through the case, if the transfer case was bad.

If you are not sure, take it to a shop and have them check for you. They may have to remove the transfer case to see if there is any damage inside the case.

Good evening,

I would start by checking the fluid level and be sure there is no leak that caused it to come out of gear.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/automatic-transmission-problems

I would also drop the pan and make sure the fluid and filter are good.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-service-an-automatic-transmission

Since you have 4 wheel drive, try putting it in 4 wheel high and low to see if it moves to be sure it is not a transfer case issue.

Make sure the differential is not damaged as well. There may be gear failure in the differential.

Hello and forgive me if there is already a thread to my topic, I have looked and cannot find one exactly like mine. I bought the truck from a neighbor and it had many issues. Battery draining and overheating stalling etc. I have worked on each problem as they crop up and have had pretty good success with my repairs, and then some not so 'repaired'. After many months of repairs I got the truck road ready and it ran good, but not great. I rebuilt the TBI, replaced the TPS (which still has problems as I am about to replace it with the third one, error code 21 again but this will be mentioned again later). After clearing all my codes and running around for several weeks, the truck started to develop a thunk when I would go into gear, regardless if it was P-R / N-R or N-D. Service light came on and got code the transmission pressure switch was faulted. I ordered the switch and a new wire harness to eliminate any other switches and the trouble of going up underneath again. The 'new' wire harness I ordered was slightly different than the one in the transmission. The support holes on the new one were in different locations than the 'current' one and just removed both harnesses' contents and swapped them out, as to keep the old harness but with the new harness wiring. Replaced all the electronic parts, shift solenoids TCC the pressure switch etc. Another problem arose, the new wiring had an 'additional' solenoid and directions to the upgraded design and location. Installed everything and put it back together filled it and ran the cycles of checks before road testing. Everything was right on and running great with no codes and shifted smooth! I ran it for about three days when I got the problem. I was making a right hand merge turn and throttled up and the gears just let go. There was no sound as like a pop or bang or whine. No noticeable sound it was accelerating and I was at about 40 or 45 MPH when it felt like it went into stall like symptoms but it was still running. I gave it gas but the tachometer would rev and no power and my speed naturally, decreased and I pulled over. The truck was still running and there was no Service Engine message (yet). We checked the linkage, fine and moving the shift select; fluid- right on; leaking - none. Got it towed back and figured the transmission pump failed but wanted to make sure it was not the work I did with all the switching of electronics (minus the pressure switch). So I took out only the wiring and replaced it with the old wiring and I removed the 'extra' solenoid from the valve body. So I am back to original TCC and the wiring. The 1-2 2-3 solenoids, second to third shift, and the pressure control solenoid are still in the body. I put it back together and filled it and still, no gear in any position and no Service Engine message (yet). So I checked to see if I had pressure (just for presents not to what amount). I removed the pressure check bolt and started the truck. It blew out the tube I inserted into the port and was a huge mess. I have pressure, as to what amount not an issue so far (I think). I also removed the wire harness and started the truck, to generate an error code. Now the truck ran for about thirty to forty five seconds and a whine started to get louder and louder towards the bell housing. I shut it down and checked the fluid and it was proper. Service Engine warning came on, finally. Codes read 21- TPS and all the codes related to the disconnection of the transmission wire harness. Disconnected the battery and reconnected the transmission wire connector and cleared the codes. Restarted the engine, still no gears and the Service Engine light on again. Read code 21 only. Tried to clear again and it repeated again. I feel as I am real close to the cause but I lack the knowledge. Would someone please try to help me. Thanks! Joe

Hi Joe,

It sounds like something let go inside the transmission like a broken input shaft. I would remove the transmission and pull the converter to inspect. Here is a video showing the job being done. Not the same car but the process is the same. Also check out the diagrams below.

Check out the diagrams (below). Let us know what happens and please upload pictures or videos of the problem.

Cheers, Ken

Hi Ken and thanks for the information. Could you possibly attach the parts name list, associated with the diagrams you provided? Just wondering about your answer. Would such a cause as you suggest, would that trigger a fault code? Also, what would you think is the continual reason I keep going through TPS's? I will try to upload pictures as soon as I take some. Thanks again!

I do not think it will cause a codes, but it does not hurt to try. Here is a guide to help and I found parts lists below:

My son was on his way to school one morning and the transmission poured all the fluid out of the back of it, the dipstick still reads full though. When put in gear it will not move. Any idea what might be wrong?

Hey NESSA08,

If the dipstick still reads full then it is highly likely you have fluid leaking from your 4x4 transfer case and not the transmission.

They use the same colour fluid generally but are separate units.

Can you upload a picture of where the fluid is leaking from to confirm this please?

Regards, Joe
