My transmission will not engage why - Does not go into gear?

Where the rear driveshaft attaches to the transmission is the transfer case.
This may be where your problem is.

If you are unsure at this point I would advise that getting towed to a shop for them to check the transfer case may be your best bet.

The transfer case can be rebuilt or replaced sometimes relatively inexpensively.

Have you got manual or electric shift for the 4x4 on this vehicle?

It is possible the transfer case is in neutral. Ensure you have 2WD selected and retry. Try selecting 4x4H and see if you get any drive.
