Overheating

About two months ago my dash panel told me to turn off my A/C due to hot coolant and idle engine, the heat gauge went all the way up. Turning off the A/C caused the heat gauge to come down. When I had a chance I checked the overflow jug and it was fine. The shop said they could not see why it was overheating and suggested that I have it flushed out and replaced the coolant. Car ran fine for a month or so and suddenly the check engine light came on and after a few miles the car overheated again with the same message as last time, only this time when I turned off the A/C it did not bring down the heat gauge. I had the car towed and the same garage said that the radiator cap was no longer holding pressure and my fluids were very low, after replacing it it was not overheating and the check engine light was due to a crack in a boot or coupling on the manifold and unrelated to the overheating issue. Car ran good for a couple days and then a message to check my coolant levels started coming on every time I would start the car. My uncle checked the coolant levels (which was only slightly low) and drove the car and the light went off after three miles and I drove it for two more days and just hit reset and the light only came back on when restarting the car inconsistently. After two days of this the car once again overheated and most of the coolant was gone. Same shop ways that they are now finding an obvious leak on a seal near the rear of the engine near the heater core, but they still cannot figure out why it is overheating. They checked the thermostat and the fans and both appear to be fine. Help! I simply cannot buy another vehicle.

It sounds like to me it could have a blown head gasket but to be sure lets do this test to confirm the failure.

Please let us know what you find.

Two things come to mind; if the coolant is leaking that would be the source of the over heating or if the radiator has blocked internally or externally.

Here is a guide to help you see what I mean:

This one I gave you before but check the radiator examples.

They did flush everything out the first time it over heated (and my uncle said he did not notice any obvious external debris) and at that time there was no discernible leak to be found. Today they are fixing the new leak I mentioned and changing the thermostat just in case it is not opening every time and my uncle is going to check the cooling fan connections when I get the car back.
I did look over the radiator link and I will share it with my shop as I see there are multiple other things that could lead to overheating that the shop did not mention. I will keep you posted. Thanks again.

So. Ever since the shop replaced the thermostat the heat gauge only rises (1bar and what appears to be at random times or when I accelerate onto the expressway) in the heat of the afternoon and not at all first thing in the morning. However last Thursday when temperatures went above 80 F the gauge went up 2 bars. Needless to say, I am getting worried that I may get stranded sometime soon.

So when you say one bar do you mean the gauge is staying on the cold side?

I am attaching an image from when it overheated to demonstrate the bar level. Currently it has been indicating 1 to bars above the middle line (into the more faded bar area) on the gauge during hot weather and expressway acceleration. Until the overheating issues it never went above that line.

Thanks for the upload, a couple things come to mind, first if they installed the thermostat backwards it will cause the engine to over heat which looks like what is happening.

Here are some guides and video to show yo what Im talking about.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-thermostat

and

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-an-engine-thermostat-works

and

The other thing that comes to mind is the temperature sensor itself has gone bad or there is a poor connection at the sensor. Here is a guide to help you with that.

Please let us know what you find.

I will check out the links as I don't think it was a faulty installation of the thermostat because if that was the case why was it over heating before hand, or do you think its possibly now a secondary issue?

Just saw this reply, and I cant hear anything from the inside of the car and I am afraid to let it keep running. I just took my car to a GM dealer and they suspected that the water pump was failing. I had my uncle change for me and still no luck. The dealer said they were able to get the car too overheat so I hope they would have accessed the fans. It did run for 2 days without over heating 2 times in a row since changing the water pump.

Lets check it this way, When the engine is cold turn the air conditioner on and wait 2 minutes. You should be able to hear the fans running. You can also lift the hood and just look.

I haven't done the fan check yet and I know that they have been diagnosed as kicking on when needed. My uncle is wondering if perhaps they are not kicking on consistently and questions whether or not the connections are solid but says they are difficult to get to. Any suggestions on checking those connections?

A bad connection or relay can cause the cooling fans to work only sometimes.

Here is a guide and some wiring diagrams to help us test the system.
