Timing belt marks?

I have a question, and I would really love for someone to help me. I have a 1997 Toyota Camry. 4 cylinder. The timing belt got hung up and shredded. When I went to replace the belt, I noticed that I couldn't turn the Cam sproket gear by hand. I had to put a wrrench on it just to turn, and when it did finally turn, it made a 1/4 turn, then seem to have freed up. Then got hung up again. Is this the result of a bent valve? And also, once everything is back in place, what is the correct way to set the timing?

The 1.5L and 1.6 DOHC are interference engines which means if the belt breaks you have bent valves. The 1.6 SOHC and the 1.8 engines are not interference engines. Check out the guide below to see the marks and instructions.

Please run down this guide and report back.

Hello,

Here is a guide and some diagram (below) That shows the alignment of the crankshaft to the camshaft.

https://www.2carpros.com/diagrams/toyota/camry/1996

You will need to jack the car up

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/jack-up-and-lift-your-car-safely

and remove the harmonic balancer

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-a-harmonic-balancer-works

The diagrams below will show you how to do the job

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers, Ken

Went to replace timing belt on camry and noticed that there seem to be odd tiiming marks on both the crank and cam. On the Cam gear, there are three marks, two on the teeth which are six teeth apart and then there is a hole in one of the "spokes" on the cam gear. By the camshaft seal there are also two marks; one is a divet and another looks like a drilled hole.

Now on the crank, there is a dot on the pulley and a little mark on the block. I have lined up the gears to what I believe are their respective marks but the engine still will not start. It feels as if there is no compression. I don't believe there are any bent valves, I just believe the crank/cam are not timed correctly. Please help with the timing marks

If you timing belt is still on and the engine is running okay, align the engine to number one TDC and verify the marks.

The belt broke, and aligning to TDC will only give me the right mark on the crank, which still leaves finding the correct marks for the cam.

It is difficult telling you without looking at them because there are different marks. I suggest you buy a Haynes book for your vehicle. It will give the set up. Good luck

OK, had to put a new head on my 95 Camry LE with a 2.2. The head is set just fine and the car starts but runs very rough and I'm getting a little "pop" and "chug" back through the main air intake while running so the valves have to be slightly off. It's not awful but it's there. I have worn the web and your site out looking for answers. The closest I have come is a thread on Toyota Nation http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/103-3rd-4th-generation-1992-1996-1997-2001/180435-camshft-timing-marks-5sfe.html My cams are lined up exactly as they are in the attached image from that thread. I've been stuck at this point for days and simply have to get the Camry running again. I've looked for pics that would show me cam lobe positions when #1 Cyl is TDC but can't find any. I have of a service manual PDF but it isn't helping. It has to be something simple. I'm not a mechanical moron but this one has me stumped and lack of info isn't helping.

See pictures for locations. Last picture is of timing with crank pulley on valve adjustment is.007-.011 intake and.011-.019 exhaust. That may be your problem as well.

Yes, I have done all of this when lining it up. Those images are easy to find. My concern is with the intake and exhaust cam alignment. The picture I sent is of a 1997 but my 1995 has the same marks. It starts but behaves like the valve timing is slightly off.

The first picture that you sent shows the alignment pip that is on the block and a notch in the gear on the crankshaft. My gear has no notch, only a circular indentation on the face and the key way hole (squarish hole). If there is supposed to be a notch to line with the pip I am not seeing one (just went out and looked again).

Are you replacing the tension spring? It has been revised if not that may be your problem as well as debris in one of the gears. Check for debris the line up mark looks to be even with key way and may not be visible.

I have a 1995 toyota camry with 140,000 miles. I recently had the timing belt changed and this morning the car would not accelerate properly. The mechanic has told me this 'since the timing belt was changed the tenstion on the cam shaft was affected and that is why I am having a problem with accelerating. Can this be possible? Or am I getting scammed?

No such thing. He didn't reset the base timing after the belt was changed. He doesn't want to follow-up on his work--thats a shame for a professional like myself to hear. Make him do the job right! Good Luck
