Yep, a very common issue.

Go to a transmission shop. They should stock the gear for you. Tell them the color and the number of teeth.

I would still look for the correct gear color.

What type of transmission do you have? If you manually put it into 2nd gear, does it move? Check the transmission fluid level.

Try changing the fluid and filter. Check the kick down cable for proper adjustment and and smooth operation. If these don't work then
this sounds like a sticking 1-2 shifting valve inside the valve body of the transmission or a 1-2 accumulator piston stuck. The valve body is repairable and removable without removing the transmission--and removing the transmission is the hardest part of repairing a 700r4. Unfortunatly, if the acc. Piston is stuck the transmission has to be removed and taken apart.
If you decide to change the transmission valve body, make sure you replace it with the exact year make and model because the valve bodys differ in these transmissions
If you decide to replace the transmission I suggest to get a factory rebuilt transmission. They are not that much more, they have all the upgrades in them and they have a factory warranty. And if you go this route the transmission you get, most likely be a 4L60E which is an upgrade and replaced the 700R4. Keep me informed

So I recently acquired a 1988 Chevrolet truck, and in the middle of hauling two canoes (in the back of the truck) for a day on the river, the truck would not shift into a gear that allowed us to go over 40 MPH. We tried putting more transmission fluid into the truck, and it started to shift, but after about 2 minutes it decided not to again. I will admit that I do not know much about trucks, but I do love this car and if we can't figure out how to fix it I will be forced to sell it. Can anyone help me?

Ok, did you check the level of the fluid with the truck running and in park or neutral?

Now when you say "as many as it would let you". Do you mean till it read at the full mark on the dip stick? What color was the fluid prior to adding? Did it have a burnt kind of odor?

Yes, until it was to the full mark, and the entire engine smelled burnt after we tried to see if it would shift or not. And I do not know what the color of the fluid was.

Transmission is shifting in drive and in the first and second gear, but hanging up in third. Is that a linkage problem or in need of an transmission service?

Good morning,

It is possible there is dirt in the fluid and that is hanging up one of the valves in the valve body.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/automatic-transmission-problems

Changing the oil/filter is the first step I would suggest before moving on to other possibilities.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-service-an-automatic-transmission

Is the check engine light on?
