Transmission problem
1999 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 160k miles

'99 camry will not move in forward gear. Reverse works fine, forward gears are like being in neutral. I am wondering if this is the transmission or something else. From what I have been reading it may have something to do with engine overheating. Heat gauge stays cold all the time and this started shortly before gears stopped working.

The temperature down on cold all the time, at least on my car, was the thermostat. Cheap to replace, it was kind of a pain because of where its located. My guess is $80 if you have someone do it for you, $60 labor and $20 thermostat. Don't go to dealer, though, they will be higher and its not necessary.
I just don't see how that's related to being in neutral all the time. Check the transmission fluid, if its dirty change it. If its clean change it. I had good luck on our 1992 using an additive called Slick 50 for Transmissions. But the car only occasionally had trouble going into reverse, and drove fine in forward gears.
On second thought if it was my car I would try to get a free estimate on the transmission repair first. Good luck, my 99 has 334,000 miles on it and I still drive it everyday. They are good cars.

when I put my car in drive it acts as if it is straining to get moving forward than it eventually moves forward. What is wrong with it?

Lack of acceleration, chugging, hesitating, jerking, bogging, misfiring etc. Could be caused by one of the following below

Oxygen sensor.
Catalytic converter.
Fuel injectors dirty/sticking.
Mass airflow sensor/Airflow meter.
Throttle position sensor.
Crankshaft position sensor
Knock sensor
Manifold absolute pressure sensor.
EGR Valve
Fuel pressure regulator leaking or defective fuel pump.
False air leakage.
Fuel contamination.
Foul/defective spark plugs.
Open spark plug wires.
Ignition coil/Coil packs defective.
Incorrect ignition timing.
Cap and rotor.

Note:If it doesn't apply disregard it

Lets try the simple ones -test the coolant temperature/throttle position/vehicle speed sensors-The computer uses these input signal from these sensors as an indication of throttle and governor pressures and overdrive at which time it commands a given shifting solenoid to provide the upshit/downshift/overdrive/lock up-if all checks out -its coming internally from the transmission

Hello,

Please scan the car for trouble codes, I think you will find there is a code for a transmission shaft speed sensor that is out.

Here is a guide that will help you get the codes

Please let us know what happens.

Best, Ken

Have a trans guy scan for codes see if any are there then he can check to see if governor is working or a shift valve is sticking.

Have a trans guy scan for codes to rule out electrical problems it may be the tcm is bad or shift valve or a wiring issue. It may even be a valve body problem like a govenor
