Carburetor open takes a few cranks to turn over and if it does it sounds terrible and struggles to stay on. With my foot on the pedal a poof of smoke comes out of the carburetor and it shuts off. New full filter pump and plugs put in any ideas?

Welcome to 2CarPros.

There could be a few causes. Things such as a stuck float, plugged exhaust, plugged EGR port, and several others. With that in mind, I need you to check for diagnostic trouble codes. Here is a link that shows how it is done:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/buick-cadillac-chevy-gmc-oldsmobile-pontiac-gm-1983-1995-obd1-code-definitions-and-retrieval-method

I also noted that you indicated it has a V8, so I need to confirm that it is a full size Jimmy.

Here are a few links you can use to check different components:

Pressure should be between 9 and 13 psi.

Let me know if any of this helps. Also, if you find there are diagnostic trouble codes stored in the system, let me know what they are.

Take care,
Joe

Welcome back:

Sounds like a plan. Let me know when you get back into it this weekend. Great vehicles. I had a 1987 with a 4 speed. Loved gas but always ran.

Take care,
Joe

Welcome back, Tom.

Do me a favor. See if it will fire for a couple seconds if you use starting fluid. If it does, then we have a fuel relate issue. If it doesn't, then we need to confirm spark. If you don't feel comfortable using starting fluid, here are two links that explain how to check for spark and fuel.

Let me know the results.
