Truck starts fine and runs in idle. Place it into drive and try to accelerate and truck sputters.

To be honest, there are a lot of potential issues that can cause sputtering like you are describing. Bad spark plugs/wires/coil, low fuel pressure caused by a bad pump or clogged fuel filter, a very dirty air filter, weak/bad battery terminal connections, water in the fuel tank, and even a failing catalytic converter. If you can be more specific about exactly what it does, we might be able to narrow it down some. Also, if the "check engine" light is on, it could give us some clues too. Take the truck to your local AutoZone, Advance Auto, or O'Reilly Auto parts and they will scan the computer and get the code readout for you, free of charge.

When I start searching for a diagnosis, I start with the simple and cheap things myself. So start with checking the battery terminals (making sure that they are tight enough that you cannot move them by hand). Then take a look at your air filter. If it is dirty, go ahead and replace it ($10.00 to $15.00 at the local parts store). Also, check the air cleaner box and duct for cracks.

4) After that, go to checking the plugs and wires. Here are a couple of guides:

Start with these checks and let us know what you find. If you need more tips on how to check these things, feel free to ask.

Also, if you can get some specifics about your vehicle that would be good. The engine size, whether it is 4x4 or not, and if it is an automatic or manual transmission.
