Twice I've had my foot slip off the clutch at a stop and caused it to stall.
My vehicle cranks but won't start for a good 5 minutes afterwards. Any ideas why?

Hi,

When this happens, does it even try to start? Does the starter engage?

If the starter engages and turns the engine, I need you to check to see if there is loss of spark to the plugs or if fuel pressure is lost during that time period. Here are a couple links to help do that. However, it may be difficult based on where and when it happens.

Let me know if you have other questions. Also, if you can think of anything out of the ordinary when the engine is running that may help me diagnose the issue, let me know.

Take care,
Joe

It is cranking but not starting, doesn't smell like it's flooded. The fuel pump went out a month or so after the first incident and was replaced. Its always takes 3 or 4 tries on the mornings when it's cold out as well. It will start, run for a second or 2 and then shuts off.

Do you feel comfortable checking for spark when it's not starting? I have to be honest, like you, I'm not sure what slipping off the clutch and stalling the engine would cause it not to restart. I'm trying to determine which component or system is causing the issue. It is likely a loose connection that reacts this way because I'm sure the vehicle lurches. We need to try and narrow it down.

Here is another idea you could try. See if there are diagnostic trouble codes stored that could point us in the right direction.

Here is a link that shows how that is done on your vehicle. Try this and let me know what you find.

Let me know.

Thank you. I'll try to check the codes in the morning. If it does it when I have my husband with me then we can check for a spark.

You are very welcome. This is one of those ones that just isn't common, so I'm trying to find a starting point to begin diagnosing. Hope you understand.

Take care and let me know what you find.

I understand, my husband does all the work on his 1993 Wrangler and it has got him stumped. He said it does have a spark.

Okay, was he able to check for fuel pressure? I was thinking originally there could be an issue between the crankshaft position sensor and the automatic shut down relay. However, that would shut down spark.

Let me know about the fuel pressure. An easy way to check this is when it won't start, see if it starts with starting fluid for a couple seconds and then stalls. If it does, then we will know it is a fuel related issue.

Let me know.

Hi,

I just wanted to follow up and see if any progress has been made. Has the fuel pressure been checked?

Not yet. It's pouring rain outside and I don't have a carport at our new place yet. Thank you for asking.

The codes are 12, 22, and 55. That was this morning sitting in the driveway before going anywhere.

Hi,

It's now raining here. LOL Anyway, the codes are not relevant for the problem. One is an AC issue and the other is a charging issue. The 55 indicates all test are complete.

I have to be honest. I really feel it is related to the fuel pressure / fuel pressure drop off. Has that been checked?

It has a new fuel pump, what else would cause a fuel pressure issue?

Hi,

A few different things can cause fuel issues. However, I agree with you. Chances are the pump isn't the issue. Here is the problem, the codes are not relevant, so we have to do it the old way, one thing at a time. What needs to be done is when this happens and it won't start, we need to see if it lost spark or fuel to the engine. One has to be missing. If it is fuel, that doesn't mean the pump is the issue. It could be an electrical issue affecting the pump. If there is no spark, then we need to start checking connections on the ignition system.

This certainly isn't a typical condition. LOL Like your husband, it isn't making sense to me yet either. However, if we can determine which system is involved when it won't start, at least we can start narrowing things down.

I hope that makes sense. LOL

Let me know.
