One day while driving on the freeway my car listed above with duel overhead cams shut off as if it were running out of gas but the gauge was showing that it had plenty of fuel. It did not completely stop running. It would idle but when I pushed the accelerator it would fall on its face and shut off. I could however barely touch the accelerator and it would pick up a little but only maintain about 20 to 30 MPH. I pulled off to the side of the road and let it idle while playing with the throttle. After about ten minutes I got normal throttle response back so I got back on the freeway and it drove like nothing ever happened. A few weeks later, it did it again. That pattern kept repeating for a couple months progressively becoming more frequent until it reached the point that it would only go short distances in town. At that point I would have to let it sit for a day or two and then it would run just fine until it acted up again. It eventually reached the point that when it would act up I noticed the fuel pump running louder and then do short intermittent bursts before completely shut off. At that point I figured that the fuel pump was going out. So I replaced the pump. I turned the key on and off several times to make sure the system was pressured up. I immediately noticed how much smoother and quieter it was. Then I thought, alright it is fixed. So I proceeded to crank the engine and expected it to start right up. But it did not. I cranked on it a few more times and it still did not start. Then I came to the conclusion that the fuel filter must be clogged. So I took the filter off. While I had the fuel lines disconnected I turned the key on. The pump came on and gave its three second burst but not a single drop of gas came out of the line. (Wow, take a deep breath). I turned the key on and off several more times and still nothing.
Now, this is where I am at right now. The pump runs just fine but it is not pumping any fuel. I am baffled. I have replaced quite a few pumps in my time and I have never had one run and not squirt fuel.
My question is, what in the world would cause this and how can it be rectified?
P.S. I even pulled the fuel lines off to check for blockage. There is no blockage. They are not even dirty on the inside.

Good morning.

Stupid question but are you sure there is fuel in the tank?

If there is and the pump still does not pump, then you have a bad new pump. We sometimes get defective new parts.
