Engine misfiring and jerking?

I took my car back to the mechanic who claimed my car was jerking on acceleration due to poor gas, when I got it from him I did not drove much so I could not tell if the car was fixed. I drove the car the next day and the jerking was still there. I am taking it back one more time and if not corrected I will go to a Toyota repair shop.
I am not a mechanic but work in it and know that if a problem pops up after working on a computer, it might be due to the last thing done on the computer.

Try disconnecting your EGR and see if that solves it.

Check transmission fluid first then scan for codes. For the tires check for balance and if okay then try moving to rear to see if it makes a difference. Have your front suspension checked as well.

Since this has a fuel injector on each cylinder, if you can reach the fuel injector plugs on each, you could disconnect each fuel injector wiring plug one at a time and listen if the engine rpm drops on each one. The one that does not drop is misfiring.
That is a lot safer then pulling each spark plug wire on the distributor cap one at a time, because that can create a spark and shock you but if you cannot reach the fuel injector plugs and want to pull and push the spark plug wires off and on the cap, make sure you wear some thick gloves and use insulated pliers.

When is it misfiring at idle, revved up?
If revved up at what rpm?
You may have to repeat that test at the rpm it misfires at.
Why do you think it is misfiring?
Is the engine shaking?

Did you do that test once it was warmed up and started misfiring?
If not, you will have to do the test while it is misfiring.

Hello,

When you remove the spark plugs do they look different from the others? Let start with a compression test to make sure the engine is okay. These two guides will help us get started:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/engine-misfires-or-runs-rough

and

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-engine-compression

Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can see what's going on? that would be great. You can upload it here with your response. Please run down these guides and report back.

Hi, I have a 1996 Corolla having misfire issues. I have been changing parts hunting for the fix and no luck so far. Changed EGR, IAT sensor, Plugs, wires, cap+rotor, Igniton coil, Distributor, fuel filter and still having issues. Car actually threw several codes coming home from work for random misfires before I did coil/distributor.
When the weather was colder, the car wouldnt misfire until 20 minutes of highway driving. Now with the new parts and temp outside being alot warmer, the car acts up within a block or two. Gonna start removing fuel pump next. Any other opinions would be great.

Did you have the injectors serviced? They may need just to be cleaned.

Fuel pump did not fix my problem. May have to have injectors serviced. Could a clogged Cat converter cause this? Maybe too much back pressure causing issues?

Car was starting to misfire on occasion so I brought it to the mechanic. I now have new fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor and coil. EGR was checked and seemed ok. Wires and cap were double checked for defects. The misfiring now is as bad, if not worse than before I brought it in. The misfiring can occur in any cylinder. Mechanic has checked wiring from fuse box to ignition and remains stumped Any suggestions as to what he needs to check for next?

Check compression on all cylinders. If OK, then ignitor is suspect.

Having checked and rechecked for air leaks and al, the mechanic was relectant to suggest what to focus on next. So I decided to buy a used distributor and substitute with existing one. Lo and behold the misfiring completly vanished. Now we will re-examine the distributor to see exactly what was responsible (ignitor, pick up coil or whatever) The opinion offered to my original query is in fact responsible for resolving the issue. Thank you!
