I was driving and my car hesitated and stopped. Smoke came from the engine not that much and it wouldn't start back up. Someone told me it might be the fuel pump.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

The fuel pump is in the fuel tank, so it wouldn't have caused the smoke. When this happened, was there a specific smell to the smoke such as electrical, coolant, or anything you could identify?

Now, does the starter engage and turn the engine? If so, check to see if there is spark and fuel to the engine. Here are three links to look through. The first link is related to a crank no start condition. The next two are for checking spark and fuel to the engine.

Do these and let me know what you find.

I will watch for your reply.

Welcome back:
What I suggest then is to see if there is spark and fuel to the engine. The easiest way to test is by seeing if it starts for a couple seconds using starting fluid. If it starts for a couple seconds and stalls, then it is a fuel related issue. If it doesn't even try to start, then suspect ignition.

Other than the starting fluid, you will need to perform the tests I listed in the first post. If you need a fuel pressure gauge, most parts stores will lend / rent one to you. Also, if you need help or have questions, let me know.

I will watch for your reply.
