Hi,

Black smoke is usually an indication of a rich fuel mixture. In other words, it is getting too much fuel. Is the vehicle running properly other than the smoke? Is the check engine light staying on?

As far as a rich fuel mixture is concerned, it can be the result of a few different things. For example, the fuel pressure is too high due to a faulty regulator, a fuel injector is sticking open, a coolant temp sensor is sending an inaccurate signal, there could be an issue with an oxygen sensor, and so on.

If the check engine light is staying on when the engine is running, we need to start by having the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. This will point us in the right direction.

Here is a quick video showing how it's done:

If you don't have a scan tool, often times a parts store will do it for you free of charge.

If you can't have this done, then we need to start by testing fuel pressure to see if it is too high.

Here is a link that explains in general how it's done:

I attached a pic below that provides the manufacturer's fuel pressure specifications.

Let me know what you find or if you have questions.

Take care,

Joe
