The flasher is built into the hazards switch on these cars. To get at it, remove the bezel around the radio, remove the 3 screws holding in the hazard switch from behind and unplug.

Electrical problem
2001 Pontiac Grand Am 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

the turn signals in our car will sometimes work and sometimes not. We checked the fuses but they are fine. We just need to know the easiest way to change the signal flasher.

The turn signal flasher and the hazard flasher are both integrated in to the hazard warning switch on the dash, this is acually called a Hazard Warning module, there is a GM bulliten for this, it is acually a recall for the complaint your having, the GM bulliten # is 03043A and the dealership will replace the Hazard Warning switch module at no charge to you, GM knows about the failing switch and that is why they issued the recall on them, so I suggest you bring that car into the dealership so they can replace it at no charge parts and labor, bring the campaign number that I gave you that way theres no guesswork.

The Turn signal/hazard Flasher Module is Located inside the Hazard Switch. Pull radio Trim Panel/facade away from dash to access Hazard switch.
A Common problem is the flasher timer will click like the turn signals are on but the turn lever is in the neutral position. Before condemning the Hazard switch/timer, I recommend to first remove steering column cover to access Turn signal switch. Remove the 4 wire connector on top of switch. If clicking stops then replace or disassemble switch to clean contacts. The contacts wear and cause a fine copper connection and produce a situation as if the switch was activated.

It is held in by clips, pull it out to unclip them. May need to use a flat bladed tool to assist with this

I have replaced my flasher 3 times and it still clicks. I believe it is something in the steering wheel, but I cannot remember the part name. Could you please advise.

Not sure what the issue is. What do you mean it still clicks? It is clicking while not in operation?

The flasher makes a clicking noise when they are not on. It does it only when the car is running, but not all the time.

Ok, that's normally caused by a faulty turn signal (multi-function) switch, that is the part you use to operate the signals on and off.

Is that located in the steering wheel? Is that something I could do myself, or a mechanic? How much does the part usually run and labor?

The switch is the part that you actually twist / push to turn on the signals/wipers etc. A new switch costs around $90 - $100 and labor costs would be around $50 - $60. Total should be no more than approx. $160 after parts and labor, I would suggest trying this repair yourself as it only involves disabling the air bag system then removing one mounting screw from the switch and disconnecting the electrical plug in to replace it..
