2001 Ford Ranger

I have a 2001 Ford Ranger 4.0 V6 2 wheel drive automatic. It no longer reverses and is giving me problems in drive now too. I was told its the transmission. My boyfriend is going to try to replace it with one from a salvage yard but has never done it before. It there some sort of guide that you know of that we can follow? Are there any special extra parts we will need?

If you need a step by step guide, I strongly recommend getting a repair manual at a parts store. As far as the transmission, it may just be a broken reverse band or a computer issue. Have any warning lights come on?
