1997 Ford Escort fuel pump

Had a new fuel pump installed. Now when gas is down to 1/4 tank, car goes dead as if out of gas and then won't crank. At first, thought was out of gas even though showed 1/4 tank, added 2 gal. And then it cranked - gauge then showed it had 3/4 tank. Also, when going up a hill and some curves, it goes dead as if out of gas, but has gas. Wait 20 minutes, and it cranks then. Mechanic doesn't know what it is. Says pump is working. Any ideas? Thanks

Would first make sure that the fuel pick up is located correctly and that there is no air leaks in the pump pick up, if not located or air getting into pump as the level drops, it will not pump fuel and starve the engine.
