89 Toyota Camry Wagon Hot Start Problem

I have an 89 Camry wagon with 116,000 miles that cranks but will not turn over after running. I notice the problem mostly after fueling up, but it has occurred after running short errands, etc. The fuel cap, vapor canister, and fuel filter have all been replaced. The battery is about 1 year old. The problem doesn't happen with every hot start, but often enough to be totally aggravating. The engine has to be completely cooled down before the car will reluctantly turn over. Please help

Explain "turning over." If the engine doesnt try and spin over the problem is the solonoid contactor on top of the starter. It can be purched at a dealer and installed on the starter. Very common Toyota problem. It costs about $25.00 and is a lot cheaper than a complete starter

First of all, thanks for the quick response! Turning over means that it sounds like it wants to start (i.E. The starter sounds fine), but it just never fully cranks. I really hope this narrows it down to the solenoid.

If the engine spins normally, it is not the solonoid but if it drags and is slower than normal perhaps. It sounds like you have some other heat related problem like an injector that continues to spew gas in the cylinder. Hope this helps

The engine spins normally, so I'm ruling out the solenoid. I do notice a heavier-than-normal gas smell after a few attempts at restarting, so you may be on to something with the injector problem. Why would this happen only when the engine is hot?
