Throw out bearing

Drove car 200 miles, noticed a squeal when I shifted down. When I parked it was screaming and growling. Shut off but restarted hard to get in gear and growls when I depress the clutch to start it. Can I get it home? Back the 200 miles I just came?

From the description the damage is already done and you will probably need a new throw out bearing, and likely a pilot bearing so I would plan on a full clutch replacement as it all has to come apart to deal with them anyway. The question then becomes, are you doing the repairs yourself or taking it to a shop? In either case I personally would drive it to the location, just minimize use of the clutch. The closer you can get to either place is that much less the tow charge will be.

I need to know if I can get my car home which is 200 miles away. Do I need to call someone to come get the car and get a ride home? I will get the car fixed I just wanted to know if I could drive it home.

It is your choice. The parts are already damaged. If you do not use the clutch a lot it may make it. No real way to tell for sure. Like I said, if it was mine I would, simply because the closer it is the lower the tow charge. But the choice is fully yours.

I drove it home and made it okay. It was all freeway except the first few blocks but unfortunately the first fifty miles it was stop and go traffic in SLC, UTAH. It kept shutting off every time I pushed the clutch in to slow down. Popped the clutch and kept on going. The rest of the way was fine until I got off the freeway for the last six miles. Got to the house pushed in the clutch it shut off and has not been moved since. Trying to get it in the shop to see how much damage. Thank you for your help. Glad I made it home. Kind of scary for a single woman driving two hundred miles home with no help. Through the mountains and isolated areas.

Glad to hear you made it. I would have driven it myself as well. It sounds like a seized bearing but once it is apart it should be easier to tell. Keep us in the loop as far as what you find out when it is apart and what is put in as a repair.

Thank you. I will let you know as soon as I can get it in the shop. Hopefully the parts will not be too much. I found someone to repair it for $250.00, so if the parts are not too much I can get it fixed soon. I am a single retired woman living on social security so anything is too much, lol. And it has been over a week with no car. If I were younger and had a place to do it I could have done it myself. Always have but getting old is hard. Just not tough enough anymore, lol.
