The car seems to stay straight it's more of a bump situation like I'm feeling every change in the pavement. Then when I brake at stoplights sometimes the steering wheel turns left.

Hi:

That doesn't sound normal. The idea that it turns left when you apply the brakes sounds like right front brake caliper may not be working properly and more braking is being done by the left side (thus pulling to the left). It could also be related to a steering component or even a tire. Take a look through this link.

When you apply the brakes, does the steering wheel shake or do you feel any vibration in the brake pedal? I'm asking because if you have a badly warped brake rotor, that may what you are feeling in the steering even without applying the brakes. One other question. Does the feel you notice in the steering speed up when the car speeds up and opposite?

Let me know.

Joe

The brakes have also been squeaky, but I've been told that it's aftermarket brake pads put on before I bought it.

Hi Sarah:

Aftermarket brakes can make noise. However, that is usually the result of reusing the old glazed brake rotors or even a dirt / brake dust issue. You do have less chance of noise with better pads just because of design and the materials used, but I always get cheap brakes with a lifetime warranty (so I only have to pay once for them LOL) and have never had an issue. That leads me back to my one question. Since I now suspect that the old rotors were reused, is there any pulsation in the brake pedal or shaking from the steering wheel when the brakes are applied. Also, does the vibration change when the brakes are applied?

Let me know.

Joe, thanks. The old rotors were resurfaced. No vibration on braking. Yesterday a person at Firestone put more air in my new snow tires (at least most, not sure if all 4 needed it) and there has been a remarkable difference in the steering wandering feeling.

I still have no explanation for why my front right wheel was making a scraping sound for about a half mile just before a fishtailing in snow accident 2 weeks ago (only a few days into the new to me used car.) They found a worn CV joint and replaced the left front axle. Then I got the snow tires.

Hi Sarah:

Is the scraping noise gone? You know, it isn't uncommon for the backing plate behind the brake rotor to get bent or rust allowing it to touch the brake rotor. That will make a scraping noise.

Are you still getting a pull to the left when braking since the tire pressure was adjusted? Also, it's a good idea to pick up a tire pressure gauge at a parts store and keep in in the vehicle. They are about the size of a pen and very inexpensive. If you open the driver's door, you will see a label on the door frame that indicates the original equipment tire size and the recommend tire pressure. If you have a gauge, you can keep and eye on it.

Let me know.

Thanks. I brought it in and the dealership found nothing wrong, said I just have to get used to the snow tires. I feel so pushed around in even light wind. And on uneven road I feel like I'm going to lose control of the steering. :(

Sarah,

Snow tires should not cause a change in handling. What is the air pressure in the tires?
