Engine stalls while driving

Well, I've replace the old battery but not with the one the parts book recommended. Also the plug and wires, for the past 2 or 3 months I was having trouble with my car battery draining. So I replaced it and now when I start it, it makes a grinding noise but starts and after letting it warm up I drive it not even a couple miles to the store. I shut it off and come back maybe 20 or so minutes later, I start the vehicle and drive back home with some action like car car wants to shut off. So I keep a little pressure on the gas pedal and once I get home I shut the car off and try to restart it a few minutes later. And bam, wont start, cranks over but wont start like it's not getting any gas. Can you help me troubleshoot this problem?

Hi,

The grinding from the starter sounds like the bendix is bad and not fully engaging with the flywheel. If possible, record what it's doing and upload it for me to hear.

As far as the no start with a warm engine, I need you to check if there is both spark and fuel getting to the engine. Here are two links that show how it's done:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-an-ignition-system

Here is a link that explains the most common causes of a crank no start condition. Take a look through it as well.

The idea that it doesn't start warm leads me to believe it could be related to the crankshaft position sensor. When they start to fail, usually it happens when the engine is warm.

One last link. This one explains the common symptoms of a bad crankshaft position sensor. See if they mirror what you experience.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe

Well Joe, I don't know yet how helpful your answer to my question will be. The links you sent with your message I do believe that it is the crankshaft position sensor, so I will be changing it out and see if that helps. I hope it could be that simple, so I will prematurely say thanks and if your right I will send you another message letting you know.

Let me know if that takes care of it. Interestingly, when they start going bad, the heat causes them to fail, so that is what I'm thinking.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,
Joe

Well, I should know something by next week, I have been looking online to fund the location of the CPS are one of the two locations looks to be pretty interesting. But i'm up to the challenge and to get my vehicle back on the road, it has been difficult having to depend on other people for rides. So once I change out the CPS I will contact you and let you know if it was the problem.

Sound good. If you can, check to see if spark is lost when it won't start. Or, if you have access to a live data scan tool, when it won't start, see if there is an RPM signal when cranking. If the sensor is the cause, there won't be a signal or spark to the plugs. It's just a way to help narrow things down for you.

Take care and let me know.

I've been corresponding with Joe about my vehicle. I haven't got to replace the CPS yet but I have another question about a vehicle that I'm hoping you can help with. It's not a Honda it's about a Ford Taurus, my future father in-law's car seems to have a severe vacuum leak, there's a space at the back of motor that has a hole on top. Just started a couple weeks ago, but when you start the vehicle it's like a rough sounding air compressor and the sound is worse inside the vehicle and getting louder as you press on the gas pedal. I'm thinking some kind of vacuum hose but hoping you can give me an opinion on what it might be.
