Transmission problem
1995 Saturn SL1 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 172K miles

I have this 1995 Saturn Sedan, manual transmission, the clutch is as strong as death. However, the manual transmission, will not engage in any other gears other than the first gear. I can drive it in first, move the gear selector down to the second gear location (w or w/out use of the clutch). Transmission, stays in first. And I can not move the gear selector in third, fourth, fifth, reverse, even when the car is off.

Please give me some insight.

Thanks

Charlie

It sounds like either the external linkage has come apart or it has broken an internal shift fork. It will have to be examined to determine which.

First of all thank you so much for your donation. Most of the time what happens is the outer cable that attaches to the bottom of the shifter the end break's they sell a repair kit and it's a cheap easy fix. Pop out the cup holder by the a/c heater control's and look and see if that cable came off if both cable's are on then look under the hood where the cable's attach to the transmission see if on of those clip's came off. The most common clip on the transmission to come off is the big H shaped clip that hold's the cable to the transmission case. Let me know what you find.
