1995 Saturn SL1 hard shift and not shifting all the way

Well I got the car at 189000 miles and its at 192000 right now and I just wanted to figure out what's wrong with it. I've had it for two months and when I first got it, it was hardly ever doing it maybe after driving for 30 minutes. It would hard shift and after that it would seem like it's having a hard time deciding what gear to be in. And now I can't even go 5 minutes of driving it before the engine light comes on and the transmission might start to mess up. I have to ease off the gas for it not to hard shift. But it still has a hard time changing gear. Could you help?
