I replaced the AC compressor and clutch because it needed it. After replacing it before putting the Freon back in it I done the low-pressure switch test manually and the clutch wouldn’t kick in. I wired it from hot connection to clutch and it would kick in that way. Check relay and fuse and it was good. What should I do next to see why the clutch won’t kick in? From dash to wire harnesses somewhere is where I think problem is. Any suggestions for what to do next?

Hi,

We need to determine where the power is lost. How was the relay tested? The relay may be good, but if power and ground aren't being provided, it won't work.

Take a look at the pic below. Remove the relay and identify the pin numbers on the relay. Take note of where each pin connects in the box.

First, in the relay box, where pin 30 connects, it should have power at all times. Confirm that first. If there is no power, check fuse 21 in the under-hood fuse box. In addition to checking the fuse, confirm there is power to it.

If that checks good, check for continuity from where pin 87 goes into the box and the dark blue wire with a black tracer connects at the compressor clutch. If the wire tests good, at this point we are done with the secondary side of the relay.

As far as the primary side, pins 85 and 86 are concerned, we need to check it a little differently. If the engine runs, then pin 86 should have power when the key is on. Check that just to make sure. If that is good, then we need to check pin 85 for continuity to ground when the AC is turned on. For the primary side to be completed, the PCM needs to provide a ground path to pin 85. We need to make sure that is happening.

Since it turns on when you provide power, then I feel the ground at the clutch is good.

I attached the wiring schematic below, so you have a reference. Let me know what you find or if you have other questions. Also, here is a link that explains how to test a relay:

Thanks for that, it was really helpful. You were right the ground on relay terminal wasn’t getting connection. It is fixed now, and it works good.
