I am having trouble shifting my car out of park, reverse, neutral. Now when I shift into any of those the car goes into drive even if it is in the P, R, N slot. Fluid is full, no visible leaks. Car is 1992 Honda Accord LX 2.2L automatic with 180,000mi. Some say it is shifter cable or linkage, which one? And is this inside of the transmission or outside. Lisa

Are you able to get the reverse gear?

Problem seems to be shifter cable and it is located externally of the transmission.

You need to get at the cable from under vehicle.

I shifted my car into reverse to paralell park, and it took more than a gentle tug to pull the shifter out of reverse and when I did that it popped and I could shift through all the gears with no tension at all. Previously that day it was almost impossible to shift from the reverse position into park. Since that incedent my car will not engage forward driving gears.

My shifter has the following gear selections.
[P]ark
[R]everse
[D4] drive
[D3] drive
[2]
[1]

In all of the selectors, except for [D3], my car would engage reverse. D3 would engage neutral, and then trying to shift down to second or first would once again engage reverse.

Hi Bolboda,

Symptom description indicates a faulty or dislodged shift cable. Most probably the end at transmission is bad and you would need to remove the cover under vehicle at transmission to check it out.

Hi jameskinuthia,

Get the trouble code for the D4 lght retrieves to see what is wrong. It could be a faulty TCM.

The above link shows how to go about retrieving the truble code. Check the D4 blinking for the th code.

Transmission problem

Hello, My 1992 Accord D4 shift indicator lamp stays illuminated no matter what gear I select. I used to be able to unhook the negative battery cable and it would reset, but it doesn't anymore. The car feels like its staying in 3rd or 4th gear when pulling out but I can downshift manually to 1st and it goes to 2nd gear. I am guessing its the TCM?

Thanks

Hi kennyd42,

When the D4 light shows and would not go off,the TCM is most likely to be faulty or there is some shorting of wire circuits.

See if you can retrieve any Diagnostic Trouble Code by bridging the SCS connector.
