I have a 1980 Jeep Cherokee 8 cyl over 100000 miles 4 wheel drive I have looked in every book on every web page and asked everyone I can think of. The problem is it started slipping out of gear and now the key spins and it will not stay in any gear or start I had to hotwire it to get it home but it takes two people one to hold it in park and one to lift hood and start it. I have done everything but take steering column completely off and tore dash apart. Please can you help I am at the point where I have no more repair options. I don't want to replace the whole steering column if I don't have to specially just to find out it was an ignition problem.
Thank You

Won't stay in gear? What happens after you get it started? While U drive does it jump out of gear?
If you are talking about jumping out of park, adjust the linkage. Key spinning in the lock. Change the tumbler
