Transmission problem
1996 Ford Explorer V6 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 171, 00 miles

When trans downshifts from road speed a sound like something spinning at very high rpm is heard in cabin. Will stop if accelerator pedal is engaged or shifted to neutral. Was told that it is likely transfer case. On internet seach I find transfer case assembly for sale. Is that likely the culprit? How difficult to replace? Any thing I should be aware of when having the work done?

Thanks for your help!

It could be the t-case, but I would probably get another opinion in person before I bought any parts. That kind of noise can be the trans as well. They arent that difficult to change, check all u-joints and the such while under it.
