Hello
Our explorer is not shifting right. It goes into 1st ok and from 1st to 2nd we have to take it up to 3500 rpm. If we shift it by using the shift lever it goes into 2nd as soon as we shift, We then have to put it into drive of course. Also we can make it shift from 1st to 2nd and also 3rd by letting up on the throttle.
The other thing that has happened exactly when this problem occured is, The truck now races at idle too 12 or 13 hundred rpm and then drops down to about 600 rpm. It does this every time were at a stop light or in idle. It does this continually.
1997 Ford Explorer, 5.0 liter V8 124,000 mles.
Thanks

Of course check the fluid level first. What trans is in it? If there is a vacuum modulator on the trans it could be the problem. A vacuum leak can make the idle surge and the throttle lifting you have to do for it to shift

The 1997 Explorer never came with a modulator, I believe they only came with older bronco's 94 explorers.
Whatever is wrong with the shifting is related to the bad idle (races up and down) as it happened at exactly the same day and time.

Is ther Check Engie light on? If so have it scanned. If not could be a slow IAC valve or a vacuum leak causing the erratic idle
