1998 Ford Escort Fuel Pump

What are the signs that a fuel pump is going bad? My car has been hesitating sometimes when I step on the gas, and now there is this noise coming from the back right where my gas tank is. I think it may have been my fault, for running the car until the tank was almost empty, even on the really hot and humid days.

Running it low on gas may cause the pump to overheat or run hotter then normal
fuel pump sits in the tank and fuel act as a cooler for it
have the fuel system pressure tested
check and or replace fuel filter
