It is really cold here. Windchill is minus twenty seven. Turned my ignition and it started up fine. About thirty seconds later my entire car starts convulsing. (I think it is misfiring) The energy all throughout the car goes in and out. After about two minutes of this the display panel says, “engine power reduced”, and “check traction control.” After reading into it, the traction light comes on as a safety feature when the engine misfires, deeming it unsafe to drive. There is also a smell and cloud coming from the exhaust.

We tried giving it s little battery boost but it only helped for a single initial thirty seconds again before shutting back off. We plan to put some HEET in today, in a hopes to revive some energy.
Any bit of help would be helpful before I tow her to our mechanic.

Hello,

It sounds like the battery is getting weak and shorting out causing the engine to stall.

Here is a guide that will help us confirm the battery problem:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-battery-load-test

and here is what you do if it fails the test:

Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

Cheers, Ken
