My dodge caravan will go forward and backward, but the foreward will shift when I put the van in drive. What would be the problem.

Check the transmission fluid. If its still no good don't drive it until its checked by a professional.

Go to a mechanic and tell them the strainer on your transmission is clogged and you need a new one installed. The part itself costs about $12-15, and the work itself doesn't take more than an hour to do. Add in the cost of the fluid (likely 7 quarts), and it should be reasonably inexpensive.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean.
You have forward and backward, but it will shift when you put it in forward.
I think you mean the van moves forward and backwards but when in drive, it will not go into gear. Am I correct.
If that is what is wrong, let me know if the filter doesn't help. If it has fluid in it already, you may have to tow it. Since it won't shift? Sorry, Im not sure what you mean.
