My car lost water and overheated on the way to work. Once I knew the car was overheating I drove it about 1 mile to the nearest gas station. I was able to add water and get the car started and drove it about 3 blocks to the work parking lot. Afternoon I put stop lead in the radiator to try to get the car back home. The water leak or hose leak stopped. I decided to try to take it home rather than leaving it in the parking lot thinking the only problem was a leaking hose and I could repair it. However on the way home the car would not run faster than 45 miles per hour and if a strain or pull was placed on the engine the car would die and I would have to wait about 15 minutes before the car would restart. I checked the oil and the level was low origianally, about 1 quart but I added oil and the level was good. Do I have a severe engine problem?

NO. There is no white smoke coming from the engine. Could it just be a tune up problem?

I doubt the tune up is the problem if it was running well before. If you lost power after the overheat, my guess is there is a bad head gasket or a warped head.

I have a 2003 pt cruiser I have replaced head gasket, waterpump, radiator, thermostat and all upper engine gaskets also installed a new battery. The car ran before but over heated numerous times. After reassembly the car will not start. I have no spark but I am getting fuel pressure. Engine codes p0107 map/baro circuit low input, p0122 throttle/pedal position sensor switch a circuit low input. These codes come back soon as they are erased. Then when I crank the engine code p0340 cam position sensor A circuit bank 1 or single sensor circuit malfunction. It is a single sensor. And p0335 crankshaft position position sensor circuit malfunction. It has a 2.4L non-turbo automatic transmission. Please help.

All of these codes can be set if the common 5 volts is missing to the sensors. Measure all three wires at the throttle position sensor. In this case you can unplug it and measure right on the terminals. Expect to find 5.0 volts on the center terminal, but you need to find it on one of the end terminals. If it's missing suspect that wire is cut or grounded. If it is grounded, the Engine Computer will shut the 5.0 volt supply down to protect it. Once the short is removed you usually have to cycle the ignition switch off and back on to reset it.

I found the problem. I had tested all aspects of the circuits they had ground and 4.8 volts reference. Which is common due to internal resistance in the copper wire. I pulled all connectors off all sensors and found the cam sensor connector and coil pack connector were the same design. I switched the two around and all codes went away and car runs great and no longer overheats. Thanks for you time and efforts to direct resolution to my question. Mectec2012.

You just said everything a mechanic needs to know or at least this one anyway, but I only have 30 years experience and I can honestly say that I have not seen everything and I am still learning new stuff everyday. Back to your problem. You said wife cranked car but timing belt was not turning but it feels tight? Well your timing belt hasn't broke so its tight, but I guarantee you there is several teeth gone on the belt problem around the crank where most of the engine torque comes from. So it has no teeth to turn belt, cams etc, but isn't broken so belt feels tight. I just hope you check those valves!
