Was told today that my AC compressor belt is going out. It makes a noise. I just bought the vehicle and the air conditioning does not work. I was told the belt runs everything so if not replaced will eventually give out and car will stop working. I was told need the belt, AC compressor and anything else associated with the AC unit. I need a rough estimate on how much all the parts will cost excluding labor. Thank you.

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros. Com.

The belt is called a serpentine belt. It does run all the accessories such as the power steering, alternator. If it breaks, those things will stop working.

As far as the AC, just because the compressor is bad does not mean everything needs replaced. Also, unless the compressor is locked up and causing the belt to squeal, it really does not need replaced. Unless you want the AC to work.

Now, with that in mind, I am going to give you an idea of what a dealer would charge for the belt replacement and an AC compressor replacement. Again, I have no idea what they mean by everything. Honestly, if that is what they said, you may want to get a second opinion.

Picture 1 indicates a choice of different belts. I am not sure which one you have so I included all. The price listed is what you could expect to pay for one at a dealer.

Picture 2 indicates how long it takes to install. Basically, how much time you should be charged for labor. The standard indicates.5 of an hour/thirty minutes. So multiply the shop's labor rate by.5 to determine what labor should be.

Picture 3 indicates the AC compressor and labor. Again, the part cost is for a factory part and not an aftermarket, which would be cheaper. Labor is nearly two hours for the job.

The one thing that will be added is to evacuate and recharge the system. I am not sure where you are located, but on average, you can expect around $75.000 to $100.00.

I hope this helps and is what you needed. If you have other questions, let me know.

Take care,
Joe
