I have a 1999 Chevy Lumina w/33000 miles and small 6 cyl. The low coolant light stays on even though the radiator and reservoir are full. The car does not overheat. Sometimes the light will go out after driving a while but then it comes back on and stays on. Can you direct me to the solution?

Change the coolant level sensor. It runs about $38 and should be found on the left side of the radiator. Fairly easy to change.

There is a sensor in the coolant recovery tank that has gone bad you may need to replace the tank as a unit ehre is a guide to help you see what you are in for when doing the job.

I have replaced the radiator on this vehicle 1993 V6 3.4L Z34 DOHC. I have filled the radiator and the overflow and the low coolant light stays lit where is this sensor located so I can replace it myself.

That sensor should be mounted in the radiator? When you removed the old radiator, did you unplug an electrical connector? The new radiator probably has a plug in the threads, where the sensor goes.

Engine Cooling problem
1996 Chevy Lumina 6 cyl Automatic

I have a 1996 chevy lumina ls 3.1 and my low coolant light keeps blinking on and off. My radiator and my reserve tank are both full, I have not seen or heard either of my fans come on. A friend of mine who does his own work on his cars believes that it is the thermostat. I also believe that this is the problem but I do not know where to find my thermostat on my car. Can you please help me pictures of where the thermostat will also be very helpful.

My low coolant light has been going on and off as well. I at first thought it was a bad sensor. I have developed a new theory.

I have also had some squeling from the belt.

I noticed that the interior of the engine compartment around the coolant reserve looks like it has been sprayed.

I am wondering if there is a leak in the coolant system that is spraying the belt and making it squeal and causing the low coolant light to blink somehow.

I will look for a leak. I have noticed that the coolant level is dropping slowly.

Wait until the engine is at room tempature

and then remove the radiator cap, fill it up with 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water,

then fill the overflow tank up to the full line.

If you keep loosing antifreeze you need to have that looked into.

Do as suggested by the person before me, then the final step is locate the 2 air release values. One is right on top the thermstat housing the other is the other side of the motor near the water pump. One lets air out of the hearer core the other does the cooling system. Let the motor warm to open the thermostat having already done the manual fill as described above. Then use a small box wrench to let the air out of both of these values. Let a little water squirt out it doesn't hurt. It will be hot now so not too close and not on you. Then retighten the 2 little values and when the car cools it will suck water from the over fill tank to replace the air you let out. You can see how much by premarking the level of that tank with a marksalot, just a little line, then after it cools take a look and the level should be lower by up to 1 inch or so. Hope this helps.

is quite right about the bleed screws, I was thinking your car has a 2.8.

I checked and you have a 3.1, and have the bleed screws.
And very possibly, you may not have a radiator cap.

There is a sensor in the coolant resevior that lets you know you need coolant. If there is enough coolant in tank look for wiring to tank this is the sensor. If coolant is low be sure a check for coolant leasks.
Summers here and you do not want to overheat.

You can also pop that sensor off and clean it. You will lose a lil coolant in the process, but can replace it. It can be found "while facing the car" on the left hand side of the radiator, 4 inches down. All you need to do is pop off the wire that holds it in place.

Ok, I am a certified GM tech, recently Nissan master certified, ASE certified. We all run into problems that baffle us on some of these cars but this is a new one. It's a 1999 Chevy lumina, was brought to me by a friend for coolant loss and a shifting problem. I found and repaired a cracked radiator, worn/loose water pump, intake gaskets leaking. I couldn't drive it to check the Trans so since I knew it had a couple of dtcs for the pc solenoid and other shift related codes I bought a filter kit, PC sol. And fluid. Got done with the engine side of it and took it around the block. The car ran great and shifted like a clock. My brother followed me in this car to drop mine at my house and when we got there he said the Trans was not shifting. I got in, drove it and sure enough it was stuck in 3rd or forth gear and the low coolant lamp flashing. Coolant level is right. Trans fluid not burnt and is right on level. I turned the car off, no scanner at this time, restarted and drove it. Shifting great. Until the low coolant light came back on and started flashing. Seems as if the Trans went into failsafe and this time only a vss dtc. Checked vss- ok cleared dtc and all has been good for a week. I know it will return

Yes, unplugging it while the problem is happening would be a great idea. I've been waiting for it to happen again since I realized the two problems are actually one. I did replace the radiator and swapped the old sensor to the new radiator and while it was out and before I new the whole problem I did check the sensor probes and they were pretty clean. I haven't been able to make it act up again but I'm waiting. It is normally open (with coolant at the correct level it would close the circuit) so I would have to unplug it and jump the terminals in the connector. I guess I'll continue to wait it out because I'm sure it didn't fix itself, and I'll let you know what I find at that point. Thanks

Low coolant light is on again. Have taken it in to have the intake maifold replaced, along with the radiator and the hoses to the coolant bucket.
