The scaner is a odb II or a actron cp 9001 gm code scanner. There are a couple other ones but they do the basically same thing. It is a regular scanner like ones used by repair stations and get plugged in by the dash. To save some money see if there is any place around you that will lend you a scanner or if anyone you know has one. I am not sure but a few auto stores have lend tools, I don't know if they have scanner though. We have test equipment in the test equipment store.

Sounds like a shifting solenoid problem-

Check if you have this connector under dash right of steering column-jumper A to B and read off the MIL flashes.

A common culprit is the 3-4 piston. The seals get worn and allow fluid to seep in, thus burning up the 3-4 clutch pack. I got a 1995 z71 4x4 brother. I feel your pain bro lol

Ok I had that same problem and one of my friends said to hurry up and change the tranny fluid or it can kill your tranny. So we replaced the fluid, tranny fluid filter and gasket altogether it was about 32$ the filter and gasket is about 11 and you will need about 1 and a half gallon of automatic tranny fluid.

I hit a deer and replaced the trans cooler and now it will go directly into gear and then will kick down and not allow it to shift to next gear and when I let off the gas it will continue into gear

Well, im guessing you have already checked the most obvious wich would be low trans fluid. If you ran over the deer you may want to check the shifting linkage also bent lines or blocked trans fluid hoses. Other than that a filter replacement and trans flush might be a good investment if not other wise the problem.

The problem is that the transmission will not shift into 3RD or 4TH gear. Sometimes it will shift fine and then when I stop or slow down to where it has to shift back to 2ND it will not shift back into third. Sometimes it will shift if I build up enough speed going down a hill and let it drift without giving it any gas for a good distance, and than sometimes not. Once it shifts into 3RD it always shifts into 4TH just fine. There is no CEL on. I had a shop road test it with a computer and they said the trucks computer is calling for 3RD and 4TH gear but it was not shifting. I was told it could be a solenoid not activating or just hanging up. Could this be the problem? If so, where could I find a diagram of the solenoids, which is which, and how do I go about testing them? I was planning to change the filter and fluid this spring any way. No reason I couldn’t do it now while it’s only 40 degrees instead of 80. The cold air is good for the lungs, just not the back. Thanks for all your help.

I would suggest having the PCM scanned for any stored trouble codes that could be related to shift solenoids or other electronic issues

Read the guide below for some ideas on what may be causing this problem
