My car will not start and fuel gauge is stuck on empty

Using pump in tank and a 3/8 fuel hose attatched to fuel line disconnected at fuel filter under the hood on drivers side I started pumping out old fuel and it looks and smells old

I flushed all the fuel out with pump running and a hose connected to the inlet line on filter under the hood. I put 3 gallons fresh fuel and with a little spritz of starting fluid the engine started and stayed running. It definitly was a bad fuel pump along with very old gasoline. Car starts and runs good. I will keep running engine and putting fresh fuel and also change fuel filter again. Once I get tank as clean as I can by doing that I will get a new pump and sending unit assembly.
