4WD does not engage. Switch does not "light up" showing 4WD option (hi-low) or make "clicking" sound.

Ok here is a diagram of the vacuum that locks the front diff. I would like you to check to see that all the vacuum lines are not cracked and connected good and tight. Check the 4x4 relay and check fuse number 23. IN the under hood battery relay fuse box check fuse 104. Let me know what you find and we will go from there.

I had a problem with the windows not working intermittently and the wipers as well. The 4x4 light was light was on and it was not in 4x4. The 4x4 did not work, The odometer would work intermittently as well. I replaced the GEM module now the 4x4 is engaged all the time, the 4x4 light is not on. The odometer is still intermittent but everything else is working fine. The GEM module I purchased is for a 1999 thru 2003 f 150 with button 4x4. My truck is also a button control 4x4 or switch if you prefer.

I was driving down the road no previous problems with the transmission it was even doing great all day. Turned on an exit and rpm shot up and I had no reverse and no forwards just grinds when I put back in park. What happened? And this is the third transmission been put in this truck.

Good afternoon,

The fact that it grinds leads me to believe it is not the transmission.

Good chance it is either the transfer case or the differential.

Were there any noises before this happened?

It does not sound like the transfer case. Check it to be sure.

I took this to a mechanic because the electonic 4 wheel drive shift button seems to be working. It lights up and makes the same sounds it always did, but it doesn't engage into 4 wheel drive high or low. The rear tires just spin. They called and said the vacuum hoses were melted? Can you tell me what could have caused this. I don't drive this truck very much or use the 4 wheel drive very much. Any ideas?

I had a similar problem with my '98. Replaced a bunch of stuff - turns out the problem was a sticky valve on the transfer case (controlled by vacuum). So now every now and then I spray it with WD-40 and it's good to go.

Yes there is to the front diff. There is also a motor on the back of the transfer case. Here is the vacuum diagram of the vacuum system for the front axle engagement. Hope this helps and have a great day. Your donation keeps us going.
