Although the diagram and wire color coding is somewhat different than the one I have From Haynes, it promted me to recheck the fuses again. I have power to the fuse box in the engine compartment and none of the fuses are blown and none are blown inside the vehicle. On my diagram it says meter from the I/P fuse panel to the EEC/PCM relay, so I pulled the fuse labeled meter and checked for voltage with the ignition in the on position and found no voltage. On your diagram it said engine from the I/P. I checked that with ignition in the on postion and no voltage. Your help is greatly appreciated.

When I pulled the fuses in the engine compartment and check either side of the prongs, only one side was hot. The inside I/P fuse panel I checked where the plades went in on both sides and no voltage with ignition in the on position. I also checked for continuity between engine/meter fuses to EEC relay and there was a connection on both sides!

I had posted earlier about a rough idle and car died.I changed the fuel filter and now discovered that the fuel pump sometimes runs and sometimes it doesnt.I have a (spare)escort that I took the inertia switch off of and replaced on the car I am having trouble with. The car immediatly started and ran fine.I shut the car off and on several times and it started right back up. Thinking I had solved the problem I was going to drive into town for a test drive when out of the blue, once again, it wouldnt start.I also noticed that I couldnt hear the fuel pump run.I pulled the back seat cushion out, gained access to the pump and pulled it out.I looked for any visual problems and found none.I then hooked it up to a 12 volt source and the pumped worked every time. Ii placed it back in the tank and it worked a couple times and then stopped again.I checked the fuel pump relay and it also checked out fine. What in the world can be the problem? Do fuel pumps that go bad intermittently work sometimes or do I have some other problem?

I found out that there was a service campaign (94B55) that called for fused jumper harness to be installed. Mine had not had this done but the 93 escort I have for parts had it so I installed it and my car actually started and shut off about 8 to 10 times in a row. However this morning once again the fuel pump wouldnt do a thing.I can hear the relay clicking like normal.( I also switched it with the 93). Today I bought a new multimeter and plan to checkout the harness to see if i'm getting juice all the time

I checked the power through the harness and found that it had juice 100 % of the time. Bought new fuel pump and seems to be working fine now. The guy at parts store says he has heard of some pumps working intermitently and some just giving up all together. After I pulled this one out it wont work at all now. Thanks for the guidence!

The relay is under the hood. Check to make sure you are getting spark and the fuel pressure is within the manufacturer's recommendations. For directions, go to our home page under the DIY section.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

I have a 1993 Ford Escort and it has intermittent starting problems.
When it does/will start I know because I definitely hear the fuel pump engaging. Also I know when it won't because the sound is not present and the fuel cutoff light is not coming on. My opinion is that it is the fuel cutoff relay but I can't be certain. I also think it might involve a "Saf-T" key that is supposed to be a anti-theft deterrent that when the little key for it is not present then the fuel pump wont engage. But I (thought I) bypassed this by a little rewiring. Unfortunately it still didn't start. Any clues would be appreciated.

Actually the light does NOT come on and yes the relay is not the problem. I think that it is not getting power to the starter and it might be the starter itself. Everything else in the car recieves power though. The radio comes on all the other dashboard lights come on ( ie : e-brake, check engine, Oil, shift indicator )

But is like something is preventing power to go to the starter. And yes I have checked the fuses, both boxes.

Fuel pump runs for a split second as the key is turned then cuts out as the key is turned all the way forward. Replaced computer and fuel pump relay. Took out fuel pump to make sure it runs and when it has juice it runs continuously. Engine will not start.
