Symptom indicates the brakes must be heating up causing the burning smell. Check the calipers for sticking.

Air Conditioning problem
1998 Honda Accord 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Hi, I love this car, it continues to run very well and it has been well maintained. My problem is that the air conditioner does not coo the way it use to. Now it blows warm air for the first five minutes and then somewhat cool air but not enough to really cool the car. What are my options. Can it be refurbished by Honda, can it be replaced for under a thousand?

Hi dranek22,

You need to get a test done to verify the source of the problem. Any A/C shop should be able to do it for you.

The cost would depend on what needs to be done/replaced.

Hi irish5256,

If you have adjusted to max coolness, it is a sign of the evaporator frosting/icing up when there fresh air from outside getting into the vehicle.

My car's AC only blows air in speeds 3 and 4, but it is not cold and only comes out from some vents. When I push the AC button, the light does not turn on so I never get cold air. Should I replace the blower motor, blower motor resistor, or blower motor switch?

Good morning.

I attached a location of the blower motor resistor. It is the most common failure for the blower speeds not working correctly.

As far as the AC, that is a separate issue.

Do you have gauges to check and see if there is Freon in the system?

Yes there is, the problem that I am experiencing is that when push the AC button, it does not turn on. A few weeks ago it would work only sometimes.

Okay, I asked if you had gauges and checked the actual pressures for the Freon system?

I have a 98 accord with 144000 miles on it. Alright im updating my ac problem. So at first my AC will start working good but then after about 30 or 40 minutes the AC starts to slowly warm up. So then if I let the car cool down say like an hour or so and try the AC again It starts out cold but then 30 or 40 minutes later again will start to warm up again. Not sure whats wrong. Also I notice if it is real humid outside AC doesnt work either.I recharged the AC close to a year ago, BOTH fans work, I can hear the clucth on the compressor kicking on, the condenser does have a few rocks and bugs in it but it doesnt look that extreme. Maybe I should go to the pressure wash to help clean the condenser. SO thanks for your reply is there any other info you might give me. THANKS

Hi grvdubs,

This is most probably due to low cooling efficiency of the condenser.

Check if both cooling fans a re woking when AC is turned on and if fnas are blowing strongly.

Check if condenser fins are clogged.

Be sure the a/c compressor is still plugged in. Same drive belt? If so be sure the tension is good. Does the comp engage? Stay engaged or turn off and on?
