I noticed that the transmission was slipping starting off the line and into second gear. My mechanic told me the transmission is out. What is the typical transmission repair bill on this model, I believe it has the zf tranny in it. Also, does the whole thing have to be rebuilt or just certain gears?

The issue is with the cost of the parts to rebuild it, they come from Germany and the US dollar/Euro thing drives up the cost of getting the parts. Also the internal design has some limitations, a remanufactured transmission from BMW cost about $2500 and has some alterations to address the aforementioned limitations, different clutch facing material, increased number of clutch plates in certain clutch packs, improved O-ring composition, and so on. I am sure there are several tranny rebuilders that can quote on the work, shop around, have all the info that is on the transmission ID tag, these trannys are vin specific and somewhat touchy. Let me know.
