What would be the reason why white smoke is coming out of the exhaust? A mechanic just looked at it and told me it is water in the engine? Would he be right?

If a lot of white smoke is coming out then yes, there is coolant leaking internally inside the engine. You would need to have the cylinder head removed and inspected for warpage or cracks.
