Where are the timing marks for the timing chain for the dual overhead cams?

Hi there, this passat, is it the 1.8 liter engine? as this will be a single overhead cam, belt driven engine.

I am about to drive from NYC to Chicago. My car is being checked over at the VW dealership and they recommend replacing the timing belt. I want to sell that car this fall and don't want to sink that much money into it. Can I make the drive without replacing the timing belt?

If the belt breaks. You will have much more $ to spend on repairs.

Yes, it might make the journey, but it's a 9 year old belt.

If it's a 1.8T engine with stock water pump (driven by the timing belt), the
pumps have been known to fail before the water pump.

In either case, cheaper to do now than later.

The pump can fail by leaking. Coolant warning light in dash will flash.

Or

Mechanical failure of pump. Noisy bearing and at worst, the timing belt
will come off.

1.8T or V6?

Bottom line, don't take a chance. You'll get the money back during the
sale (keep receipt).

Timing belt replacement is reccomended at 60,000 miles. Doesnt' mean it has to be just reccomended. But it's better to be safe than sorry. When it is replaced you should put on a kit which would include the waterpump and new tensioner.

Per vw the t belt service isn't recommended til 105k on gasoline engines, that's what my info states.

Key is regular inspection. I have seen them fail early and the
water pump much earlier. Recently a 2002 Jetta 2.0l with 50K miles
overheated due to broken water pump.

Absolutely, visual inspections will show if the belt is worn or if the pump is leaking, then if there was an overheating issue, the shop just seems to try to get in his wallet kinda early, specially if he has no complaint. If it gets done he knows it's not going to be an issue. Not arguing brother.

No I didn't read that, been busy. Unfortunately very few technicians have a conscience, that stuff does go on. It's too bad. I work on cars because I like to work on cars. Getting paid to do what u like to do is rare.
