An unhappy cold mkii Golf engine

I've got a 1.3 mkii golf 1991 (carb), done about 130k. Every morning I go start it fine (as long as I put my foot on the gas whilst I do it) but it doesn't idle! It stalls almost every time I take my foot off the gas, the revs just drop! When I see it dropping I can save it by giving it some revs but its a nightmare every time I stop! After about 10 mins when the engines warmed up its fine but until then I have to sit with my foot slightly on the gas to stop it stalling! Also when I pull away in first my revs dip quite significantly before going up again. Not sure if they're related.
