Try replacing the cabin air filter. See if that helps any. If not, the problem is a bit more serious.

I leave that stuff to our lube tech. On a VW it may be under your cowel- just below the wipers, on the passenger side, and if its not there, it will be behind the glovebox. Wish I could tell you exactly where, but im not 100% certain.
