The transmission will slip out of gear 1 to 3 times or so if I attempt to drive the vehicle when it is cold and I have not let it warm up for 5- 10 minutes prior. It is fine if I do let it warm up before driving.

I read on another site that I might want to look at a flush and filter change. However, it warned that if the vehicle had high mileage and had not been properly maintained, doing this would actually make it worse as the transmission was relying on the dirty fluid and metal shavings as a better grip on the worn internal gears and putting new, slick, fluid in could cause complete failure.

What are your thoughts on this please? The vehicle has not been properly maintained.

Are you sure the trans fluid is full? ALso, as far as what you read, if the trans fluid is really dirty and burnt, I have seen that happen. However, if it isn't that dirty, you should be fine.

I checked the fluid level and looks to be fine. I can almost guarantee that the fluid has never been drained and replaced. I bought this used. Should I just have a fluid & filter replacement done?

Would a fluid flush at a oil change place work as well?

Have had the tranny checked by asi mech 2, one was a tranny mech, tests showed nothing wrong, tranny tech said the seals might be going bad causing fluid to leak into electronic, but it doesn't show any leakage when I check the gauage, none on ground. When it gets the od light flashes so we turn it off before we drive. Sometimes when its been driving for a while it want to slip at take off. The engine runs great so we're sure its not that. Could the coolant lines to transmission be plugged not letting it cool causing all this problems.

We were told by a friend who knows cars that we should drain and change the screen, I know our coolant has never been flushed in the radiator, could that be causing some of the problems. The tranny screen was changed 7 or 8 yrs ago

After driving a couple of miles the OverDrive Off light comes on and will not tuurn off with switch. The transmission appears to begin 'slipping' at that time. I have checked and trans fluid is full.
Any idea's?

Hi there,

Thank you for the donation,

If you have check the transmission fluid level and it is correct, then you should go get a diagnostic test done on the transmission, there will be a fault code in the ECU, I suggest that you take it to a transmission specialist not a general mechanic as they will have the specialist test equipment to do this diagnostic test for you.

My transmission does not engage immediately when shifting into drive, neither from park to drive or reverse to drive. I can shift to 2 or 1 and it will engage and then move to D, however, the direct shift to D only will work if I press the accellerator heavily and then it will jerk into forward. It also has begun to grind and/or slowly shift one into D as it goes into higher speeds. Any suggestions or thoughts?

First, if it is the original transmission, my first thought is it could be a problem within the valve body. When you shift, there are plungers with o-rings that direct trans fluid so the vehicle shifts. Over time, they get hard and dry out. As a result, fluid bypasses them and it takes a long time to work or if you rev the engine, it builds more pressure.

My second thought is a weak front pump. Again, this will deal with fluid pressure and shifting.

I guess the first thing I should have asked is if the trans is full and the fluid is clean. However, I will assume you checked it.

Finally, when you shift directly to 1 or 2, does the trans work normal when you shift to drive?

Thank you for the reply. Yes it generally works as normal once I shift to D from 2, although lately it seems to be not a smooth shift as I increase speed. Do you suppose I need to get a rebuilt transmission or any other suggestions?

Before I say to rebuild it, I have a couple questions. First, is the present trans fluid full and clean? Does it have a burnt smell to it? Has the check engine light come on? Have you tried a transmission service?

Let me know.

Joe
