1986 Toyota MR2 Idle in gear?

I have a 1986 Toyota MR2 that runs great except for the fact it wants to cut off when I shift to Drive or Reverse. It idles fine in park and in netural, but when I put it in gear it acts like it wants to die. Once I get it in gear and start going it runs solid. Where would be the first place to start troubleshooting this problem and how would one go about doing it?

Check the idle air contol valve and throttle position sensor/PCV and EGR valves
