98 Corolla -Noise in 1, 2, 3 at certain RPM

I have a 1998 Corolla w/ 190,000 miles w/ 5 speed manual transmission. It has started making a noise in first second and third gear about mid way through each gear. It is a metallic grinding/squealing/whining noise that goes away after I accelerate beyond that RPM level. (I do not have a tackometer) It does not make this noise in fourth or fifth and I can avoid the noise by shifting early. Any clue what this is? Or how urgent it is?

Hi there,

I would drain the gear box and check for metal contamination, it sound like the lay shaft bearings have failed, transmission load is not through the lay shaft in to gear so you will normally not hear a faulty bearing in top.
