Transmission problem
1996 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Automatic

Hi.I asked this question already to a technician on this site and didn't understand the answer. I want to check the transmission fluid in my car and he told me to have the car running and in park. He said that the dipstick says hot or cool, which is the transmission temperature, but he never said what I am suppose to look for on the dipstick in order to tell if it needs fluid or not. Can somebody help me? This is probably a very easy question for somebody, but very difficult for me. Thanks.

Hi michaele99,

You should have clicked the reply to question in yur previos post so the the person who answered your paost can get back to you when he receives notification.

There are the hot and cold markings on the dipstick with 3 or 4 lines. When engine operating temperature is reached, pull dipstick out, clean it, dip in and pull out( Do not invert dipstick, would give you a false reading).

The highest mark is for HOT MAX, next line is MIN, the level should not be lower than MIN. Anything in between is ok.

When cold, ie before starting of engine, the mark should be between the marks of the COLD indicator.

Recommended checking is when engine is hot.

You say there are lines on the dip stick. The only lines I have seen (when cold) are hot and cool (no min or max). Are the lines somewhere else than on the bottom of the dipstick? What am I missing?

Hi michaele99,

Sorry, got you confused.

The max and min are not stated.

There are 3 types of indications, check which is applicable.

1. Crosses marked on dipstick, level should be within uper and lower points.

2. V indents at side of dipstick.

3. Lines across the face.

It is similar to checking the engine oil.

Thank you for your response. There are V indents on the stick and while the engine was running in park I checked the trans fluid. It showed a level that reached right below the v indent that was furthest up the stick. What does that mean as far as needing to add fluid? Thank you.

Michaele

Hi Michaele,

The fluid level is at maximum so no need to top up, it is the correct level.
