Transmission problem
1996 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Automatic 159000 miles

I took my car to get a transmission flush and they told me that it had a leak and if they did the flush it would cause transmission damage. I took it to aamco and they said the leak was from the front pump seal and because they would have to take the transmission out it would cost 450. When I got home I checked the transmission fluid and didn't really understand how to read the dipstick. It showed fluid about 2 inches up the end of the dipstick. I have never had to put transmission fluid in and am wondering if I need to get this leak fixed. Also, since I can't get the flush until I get it fixed, will that cause me car problems (not getting the flush). The flush was recommended by the oil change company. How do you read the dipstick? Thank you for your time.

Hi there,

Check ten transmission oil engine running & in Park. There will be a hot & cold level that is transmission temp not engine temp. If the front seal is leaking it would be a good idea to have it repaired. If you are concerned about the transmission just heave it serviced and not pressure flushed, this is not as efficient but it will be better than doing nothing. If the seal is to be replaced make sure that they also do the drive shaft seals as well.

In checking the transmission fluid level you say there is a hot and cold line. What do I do or what should I be seeing on the dipstick when I am checking it?

Hi there,

take the car for a drive so the transmission is at normal operating temp. Check the oil level with the car running in park, if the oil level is at or very near the top mark on the dip stick it will be ok, also make suer that is is not smelling burnt and the oil is a clean red colour.
