Engine shuts off once it gets warm

Engine runs great until gets warm then stalls while driving. I suspect crankshaft position sensor is bad or possibly really dirty, due to a previous water pump leak.

My main question is can this sensor be removed without pulling harmonic balancer?

Unfortunately no. The balancer has to be removed. Here is a tutorial showing how to remove/replace:
