Shutting off while driving?

I have the truck listed above 1500, it started as a shut off after a long idle. The progresses into shutting off going down the road. Don’t know what to do. No warning signs to shut off and it cannot be predicted, shuts off and all gauges bottom out. You must wait for it to show gas again before cranking. It can take 5 minutes to a couple of hours. Cleaned the IAC valve and replaced multiply relays. Help?

Hi,

If the gauges are dropping off to nothing, it sounds like we have an electrical issue that is being affected by heat.

Do me a favor. In the under-hood fuse box, you will find the fuel pump relay. Remove it and inspect it for corrosion or damage to the connectors. See pic below for location.

This relay is a 5-pin relay. If there is a different one in the box having the same part number, switch them and see if it makes a difference.

Here is a link that explains how to check a relay if there isn't a matching one in the fuse box:

Let me know.

Joe

I have already replaced the fuel pump relay with a new one and nothing changed. I have cleaned the IAC valve, other relays, and nothing has changed. It shows nothing wrong on a code reader.

Hi,

Okay, let's do this a different way. When it stalls and won't restart, see if it will if you use starting fluid. If it does and then stalls, we know it is a fuel-related issue. If there is no change, I need you to check for an ignition spark.

Here is a link you may find helpful:

Hopefully, this will help us narrow things down. The idea of what is happening sounds like a typical crankshaft position sensor, which will cause the engine to lose spark to the plugs, but that doesn't explain the gauges shutting down like the key is off.

I'm questioning a couple of things at this point such as the ignition switch itself and either the body control module or powertrain control module.

Try what I suggested and let me know the results.

Takae care,

Joe
